Support a Misfit Artist: Erik Davis

Next up in our Misfit Artists series for the quarantine times is our very own Psychedelic Sangha co-founder Erik Davis. By now everyone has heard about his latest book High Weirdness: Drugs, Esoterica, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies (co-published by Strange Attractor and The MIT Press 2019), but have you heard the new audiobook narrated by the author himself?

I downloaded my copy today and headed to Prospect Park where my fellow New Yorkers were all doing their level best to practice “social distancing” whilst getting some necessary exercise and fresh air. The inherent weirdness of the day (and the good weather) made it the perfect time to begin an audio journey with author and narrator Erik Davis.

"Welcome to the Weird," reads Erik. "This book is about high weirdness, a mode of culture and consciousness that reaches a definite peak in the early seventies, when the writers and psychonauts whose stories I tell herein pushed hard on the boundaries of reality--and got pushed around in return."

Listening to Erik, it was easy to imagine him being there by my side in the park—the very same one where he had led a Darshan for us last fall. Hearing him narrate his own beautifully crafted sentences makes this audiobook an especially immersive experience. The kinda of trip we could all use right now.
