Good Friday Pilgrimage [NYC-BOS]

  • Boston University Marsh Chapel 735 Commonwealth Avenue Boston, MA, 02215 United States (map)

Psychedelic Sangha & Boston Entheogenic Network invite you to make a spiritual pilgrimage to Boston University’s Marsh Chapel to commemorate the “Good Friday Experiment” and the genesis of Experimental Mysticism in America.

In 1962, Walter N. Pahnke, under the tutelage of Drs. Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert at the Harvard Psilocybin Project, carried out an experiment to test whether or not a psychedelic, or “entheogen,” could facilitate a bonafide religious or mystical experience in subjects with a clear spiritual orientation.

In a double-blind experiment, Pahnke administered capsules to graduate students from Andover-Newton Theological Seminary. The experimental group received capsules containing psilocybin, an extract of psychoactive “magic” mushrooms, and the control got niacin.

Pahnke found that nearly all the seminarians in the experimental group reported having a profound religious experience. One of the participants in the experiment was the Buddhist scholar Huston Smith who, in this subsequent writings, would describe the event as "the most powerful cosmic homecoming I have ever experienced."

Join Psychedelic Sangha as we commemorate this historic day with a spiritual pilgrimage to Marsh Chapel.
